Finding a Needle in a Haystack?

Locating a 50nm particle in a several microns area is much harder than finding a needle on a haystack! Northwestern researchers developed a new technique that allows them to do just that. First, optical measurements were taken of the nanoparticles. Then electron microscopy was used to collect structural information at the atomic level on the exact same nanoparticles. This allows researchers to understand the relationship between the optical properties of a metal nanoparticle and its structure.
